It’s a pleasure to introduce this year’s recipients of the Swarovski Foundation x BA Jewellery Design scholarships.
Congratulations to Fariha Ahmed, Miles Robinson & Richard Farbey.
We are hugely grateful for the continued support for our students.
We would like to give a warm welcome to Sally Collins, the new BA Jewellery Design course leader.
Sally Collins is a jewellery maker, collector, curator and educator who has been working in the contemporary jewellery field since 2008, after graduating with an MA from Birmingham’s School of Jewellery. Sally’s passion is for creating jewellery pieces that explore an overly decorative and hyper ornamented ‘Superfrilly’ aesthetic, which question the role of collecting and our intrinsic desire to possess things in an increasingly overcrowded and fast fashion focused society. Sally has worked as a lecturer within the Jewellery field since 2010, lecturing at The School of Jewellery at Birmingham City University, Dublin College of Art and Design, HSG Dusseldorf, HDK-Valand Academy of Art and Design, Belfast University and mostly recently as the Head of Academy for the FE provision at The British Academy of Jewellery.
We’re extremely grateful for the creative insights and inspiration passed onto our students and staff through our Autumn Lecture Series 2022. Thank you to everyone who took part for imparting your knowledge and expertise with our lovely students.
On Wednesday 19th October, BA Jewellery Design Alumni Eve Lam and Lydia Hartshorn ran a Jewellery Mending Workshop at The St Pancras and Somers Town Living Centre, where members of the public were invited to bring along jewellery items and learn creative mending techniques in an effort to combat waste and reuse materials.
This event ran as part of the Climate Action Market, running on the 28th October at Chalton Street Market, where Lydia and Eve hosted another DIY home jewellery mending stall.
The Climate Action Market was host to a variety of stalls including soap and detergent refill stations, vintage clothing and more.
Congratulations to Dominik Cunningham on being announced as one of the Marzee Graduate Prize winners for 2022.
Dominik is focused on articulating the black experience through bodily adornment. With a wide lens Dominik seeks to supply a vision of blackness, which acts as a visual juxtaposition to prevalent images of hegemonic power.
This year’s selection of winners was made by Rudolf Kocéa and Marie-José van den Hout.
Congratulations to Jing Jiang on being shortlisted for the Global Design Graduate Show 2022 with her 2019 graduate work.
Her intricate collection was produced with goose feathers and brass.
The public can vote for their favourites here.
Graduate, Ruby Mellish, has been announced as the winner of the ITS Special Mention, powered by Luxottica.
“We found the attempt and depth with which the candidate has approached the investigation of a change aimed at the selfie-generation very interesting, with timely references to our own field of operation.” – ITS
See the full ITS feature here and Ruby’s graduate showcase here.
After a successful summer of shows and prizes, we would like to congratulate and spotlight our student Swarovski Scholars of the 2022 graduating class.
Shiwangi Periwal
Looking into her roots, Shiwangi’s collection is evocative of Jaipur’s blue pottery. Using contemporary techniques, she created distorted forms that reimagine traditional motifs.
Martina Kocianova
Martina‘s collection takes us on a journey exploring fungi, drawing on her childhood memories of foraging with her mother. Her jewellery represents portals that explore life’s various stages.
Dominik Cunningham
Dominik’s work seeks to explore the definition and meaning of blackness through a wide array of materials, practices and references, practices and references, some of them historically established, some deeply personal, he tries to make sense of his own past, present and future.
We would like to congratulate our students on receiving awards from Brian Wood.
The Brian Wood Travel Scholarship
Martina has been foraging mushrooms since she was a child and this inspired her to explore the different stages of life through her collection, with some pieces containing mushroom mycelium.
The Brian Wood Memorial Medal Award
Tabitha’s work is inspired by traditional whalers’ techniques of decorating whalebone, using discarded oyster shells as a canvas for her collection in which she tells her own story.
